Starting a different conversation about refugees who arrive by boat.
After research into speculative design, possible technological advances, probable futures for the Manus Island and Nauru camps, storytelling, and recent experiences of refugees this project asks ‘what future are we denying ourselves?’ I used physical objects of childhood to prompt an emotional connection with people exploring the work.
People were encouraged to speculate on the future of the toy’s owner through a stories told in a booklet that offers the power to change the story.
This project was part of the graduate exhibition at the University Gallery, Newcastle in November 2015.
